I Have A Domain Name Now What?

Buying a domain is easy. Going to any domain registrar. Registering a domain paying few dollars.

That's not a big deal.

Getting a domain name is as easy as buying a pair of shoes online. Right? That's not a problem.

Go to a domain registrar. Search an available domain name (I like .com), add it to cart, and pay the cash using your card or internet banking.

But the problem is...

After you register your domain name, you enter the domain URL in the address bar. BAM! What happened? Nothing.
"Congratulations! You bought a new domain. Now put it to work!" BUT HOW?

That is the exact thing; I am going to answer in this post.

Put your registered domain to use

Getting a domain name alone is just like registering a motorcycle. Now it's you who ride it!

To put your domain to use, you have to host your domain.

What is hosting? Hosting is the process of mapping (linking) some files to your domain name. With this, when you enter your URL, the files stored on the server will be displayed in the form of site or blog.

Where to store those files? Server. Where to get a server? Getting hosting plan.

If you are planning to build a eCommerce store, Shopify is your best bet. You need not be mess around looking for good domain registrars and hosting. Shopify can be an all-in-one solution for you to buy domain and as well as hosting for your eCommerce business. They will handle everything for you, so that you can focus on your business leaving the technical hassles to the Shopify team.

Get hosting

There are many hosting providers. Popular among them are Hostgator, Dreamhost, Bluehost, and other tons.

How to choose the best hosting service?

Ensure that the hosting provider is providing you:

  • 100% uptime.
  • Bandwidth and storage.
  • E-mail features.
  • Quick install services for installing WordPress, Joomla!, Drupal, and other CMSs.
  • And finally support.

Looking at all these aspects, for all newbies, I recommend Hostgator. Hostgator hosts this blog.

If you are very paranoid about choosing the best hosting company, try Hostgator. Because I will give you a coupon code that lets you host your site freely for one month.

Just try it. I bet you will never regret it

By applying the above coupon code, you'll get a free month of Hostgator hosting. In the meantime, you can check the quality of service that Hostgator provides you.

If you are satisfied with their service, you can continue by buying their various packs.

Go to HostGator.

Hostgator plans

You can choose any of the Hostgator packages.

To get a free month of hosting, you have to select "1 month" in the billing cycle section.

Also you have to uncheck all the options for security, site backup, SEO stuff. Because that is not there in the offer, you have to pay extra for it.

Now fill up the form. It asks for your domain address, home address, name, and other bank details

Apply the coupon code STARTUPFREE in the coupon code section.

What next? After getting the hosting plan, you will get Cpanel URL, username and password by email. Now login to your Cpanel, using those credentials.

Cpanel login

After logging in to Cpanel, there you have lots of options. Like,

  • Set a domain email address
  • If you got any other domains, host it under Addon domains (Baby HostGator plan and above).
  • Install CMSs. WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and about a dozen of others
  • Access site builder.
  • Buy other stuff like protection, mobile theme, SSL certificates, etc...

There are other dozens of options in Cpanel.

Let it be...

Setting Nameservers

Nameservers link your domain and hosting service.

How to set it?

For setting nameservers,

Login to your hosting Cpanel, after logging in, copy those two nameservers mentioned in the left sidebar.

Hostgator nameservers

In another tab, at the same time, open your domain registrar.

Here I'm taking GoDaddy as an example. It is the most popular domain registrar. Login, go to your account. There click on "Launch" next to your domain name.

Under Nameservers section, select custom nameservers. Enter the two nameservers that you copied. Hit save.

That's it.

Your hosting is ON!

Installing WordPress

Things have become more simpler these days.

Not too long back, if you want to install WordPress, you had to download and upload WordPress pack manually.

But now installation is one-click ahead.

For installing WordPress, go to Hostgator Cpanel > Click on Quick Install.

There, you will be presented with various CMSs. If you are up for blogging, select "WordPress" (the clear winner among the CMSs).
